According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, each year nearly 206,000 preschool and elementary children are injured on playground equipment. Many playground injuries can be prevented. Here are some things to keep in mind the next time you are on the playground.
Surfaces: Since nearly 70 percent of playground injuries are caused by falls to the ground, look for a cushioned surface to play on. Wood chips, bark mulch, wood fibers, sand, pea gravel, shredded tires and rubber mats cushion falls better than concrete, grass and dirt.
Climbing: More children are injured falling off climbing equipment or horizontal ladders than anything else on the playground. Check that steps and handrails are in good condition and make sure a guardrail or barrier surrounds raised platforms.
Swings: Softer seats of rubber or plastic are preferred over metal and wooden seats. Only two swings should be in each framework and they should be at least 24 inches apart. Full-bucket seats are best for younger children.
Slides: Be sure slides have handrails and good traction on the steps. Upper platforms avoid crowding. Check metal slides to avoid burning the children's skin on hot days.
Seesaws and Merry-go-rounds: Look for spring loaded seesaws which are safer for young children and be aware of exposed gears in merry-go-rounds.
