Training & Support

South Dakota Early Childhood Education (ECE) training

All childcare providers must train on health and safety topics (Childcare and Development Block Grant Act of 2014). Childcare staff and registered childcare providers must complete these courses within 90 days of hire or registration. Most orientation topics are available on demand online.

 

Required Orientation Topics

  • Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases

  • Safe Sleep Practices and Reducing the Risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

  • Administration of Medications in Childcare

  • Preventing and Responding to Emergencies Due to Food and Allergic Reactions

  • Providing a Safe Environment in Childcare

  • Prevention of Shaken Baby Syndrome and Abusive Head Trauma

  • Emergency Preparedness and Planning for Childcare Programs

 
  • Handling and Storage of Hazardous Waste Materials and the Disposal of Bio-Contaminates

  • Appropriate Precautions for Transporting Children

  • Child Development

  • Recognition and Reporting for Child Abuse and Neglect (this topic is available through the Department of Social Services website)

  • Basic First Aid for Childcare Providers

  • CPR Certification

South Dakota Child Development Associate (CDA) Program

ECC can help you earn your CDA certificate through our classes. Currently, there are scholarships available for providers at registered or licensed care facilities. You may also earn your CDA online.

CPR/AED Training from the American Red Cross

ECC offers three ways for you to take CPR classes.

  1. Scheduled classes offered each week. You must register due to class size limits.

  2. Private classes may be scheduled if you have a larger group.

  3. Blended classes combine online classes with in-person testing. Blended classes are accepted for CDA renewal.

First Aid Training

ECC offers basic and certified first aid training.

Basic first aid is available online or in-person with your staff. This class meets the requirements of training for new childcare staff.

Certified first aid is offered through the American Red Cross. It can be a stand-alone class, or it can be taken online with in-person skills testing. This course is accepted for CDA renewal.
